Custom Area Rugs: Premium & Everyday Natural Fibers
We offer many ways to customize our area rugs, but the options available are different for our Premium and Everyday collections. Read below for more information.
Weave & Binding Selection
We offer the largest selection of natural fiber rug weaves and bindings available online, so you're sure to find exactly what you want. Please note that the binding selection available for each collection--Premium and Everyday--is specific to those weaves: i.e., we cannot apply Premium bindings to our Everyday rug weaves, or vice versa.
*Premium Collection
Our Premium natural fiber collection is comprised of nearly 50 different weaves—most of those available in multiple colors, for well over a hundred floor covering options. Once you choose your rug material, you can select from 10 types of binding materials, all available in a range of textures and hues, from "best match" neutrals to vibrant colors.
*Everyday Collection
Choose from more than 25 Everyday natural fiber weaves (60+ colors total) and 5 binding fabrics (more than 60 color options in all).
Custom Sizes
Need a custom size? No problem: since even our standard size rugs are cut and bound to order, our production team is equipped to handle custom rugs too—whether you order one of our Premium or Everyday natural fiber rugs. The only limitation is the roll width of the material you select (in most cases, around 13'). Most custom size rugs don't even take any longer to make. (Premium sisal rugs with mitered corners or cutouts for fireplaces, or unusual shapes like circles and ovals are the exception.)
Please keep in mind that your custom rug's measurements must be in full inches—in other words, a measurement of 9 feet 1-1/2 inches would need to be rounded down to 9' 1" or rounded up to 9' 2".
Custom Shapes
*Premium Collection
In addition to square and rectangular rugs, our Premium natural fiber weaves can be cut into custom shapes, such as circles, ovals and octagons, or rugs with cutouts (for a fireplace, for example). Please note: for unusually shaped rugs, you may need to call us or fax a diagram to get a price quote. And in some cases, you may need to send a full-size template to our factory before production can begin. We'll let you know what to expect.
*Everyday Collection
We're sorry, but our Everyday natural fiber rugs are limited to square and rectangular shapes only.
Binding Width
*Premium Collection
Most of the bindings in our Premium collection can be applied at a width you specify. For example, Smooth Linen can be applied with anywhere from 1" to 3" showing on the face of the rug. (Bindings are wrapped around the rug's edges then stitched on—the cost is the same whether you choose to show 1" or 3". The binding width does not add to the overall dimensions of the rug.) Refer to the individual binding pages to see the width options.
Note that our workshop uses a blind stitch application for most of our Premium bindings—Narrow Cotton, Wide Cotton, Soft Cotton Twill, Cotton Pebble Weave, Jute and Smooth Linen. (Wool, Chenille, and the Leather, Suede and Animal Skin bindings are top stitched.)
*Everyday Collection
The binding widths for our Everyday natural fiber rugs are pre-determined and cannot be adjusted. The Cotton Canvas shows approximately 1-1/4" wide on a rug's face; all other Everyday bindings—Wide Cotton Canvas, Basketweave Linen, Boucle Linen and Chenille—show approximately 2-1/4" wide.
Note that the bindings for Everyday natural fiber rugs are all applied with a top-stitched application.
Lapped vs. Mitered Corners
*Premium Collection
Lapped corners come standard on all Premium natural fiber rugs with cloth bindings, but hand-sewn mitered corners are available at an additional cost. What's the difference? As the name suggests, lapped corners are applied with the fabrics overlapping at the corners of the rug, while mitered corners create a more formal, "picture frame" finish. See the illustration below.
Note: Square or rectangular rugs bound in Leather or Suede include mitered corners. We're sorry, but mitered corners are not available on rugs bound in Narrow Cotton.
*Everyday Collection
All Everyday natural fiber area rugs are finished with lapped corners—we're sorry, but mitered corners are not available for this collection.

Getting a Price Quote
The pricing for standard size area rugs—both Everyday and Premium—is listed on each individual weave page. To get a quote for a custom rug, just go to the page with the weave you like and click on any "Make a Rug" button. Our custom rug wizard will ask questions about your desired rug's size, shape, binding, etc., and calculate the price for you. If you click "Add to Cart," you can see what it's going to cost to ship your custom rug by viewing the shopping cart.
Please note that price quotes are determined based on the most economical use of material—so if you need multiple rugs or have specific weave direction requirements, we encourage you to contact us.
