Frequently Asked Questions: Tufted Wool

Scroll down or click for answers to the most Frequently Asked Questions about tufted wool floor coverings.

What are the benefits of wool floor coverings?

Wool has long been synonymous with quality and taste. Wool is prized for its ability to take and retain color, the softness of the fibers and for the overall ability to maintain that “new carpet” look longer. Wool has numerous traits that make it the ideal floor covering for almost any area of the home:

  • It's easy to keep clean due to its natural barriers against dirt and dust.
  • It's a natural fiber that purifies air quality by absorbing common contaminants and not re-emitting them into the environment.
  • It resists combustion, making it fire resistant.
  • It's biodegradable and environmentally friendly.
  • It absorbs sound, making it acoustically advantageous.
  • It's inherently water repellant, making spills easier to clean up.
  • It saves on heating costs because of its inherent thermal properties.
  • It's naturally resilient and maintains its appearance long term.

What makes your wool rugs a good value?

Our European tufted wool offers excellent quality and all of the benefits of wool floor coverings (as outlined above). What's more, we offer custom sizing to your specifications—so no more trying to make that 6—x9' or 8'x10' work, when what you really need is a 7'x11'. Finally, the supplier of our tufted wool offers a value practically unheard of in the floor covering industry: when making area rugs, they charge only for the material that makes up the final size of the rug. The industry standard is to charge for full width of the roll from which material is cut. It makes a huge difference.

What is tufted carpet?

Hundreds of needles thread wool yarn through a lightweight backing, forming loops or tufts of the required length. An adhesive coating is then applied to the reverse side, anchoring tufts in position and a second backing is applied for extra strength.

What is loop pile?

Carpet style having a pile surface consisting of uncut loops. May be woven or tufted. Also called "round wire" in woven carpet terminology.

What are serged edges?

Serging is a method of finishing the edges of area rugs cut from roll goods by use of heavy, colored yarn sewn around the edges in a close, overcast stitch. Our tufted wool area rugs are machine-finished with a “serged to blend” overcast stitch, using a yarn that closely matches the yarn of the rug (click here for image). A narrow fabric binding applied beneath the stitching adds strength and helps to keep yarns in place.

Note: Our tufted wool rugs are machine-finished with a “serged to blend” overcast stitch (see above). Because even the corners are machine-finished, there may be a little variance in the thread tension, sometimes causing the serged edges to appear uneven in spots. This is normal and not considered a defect—hand serged corners take much longer (and cost considerably more).

What size rug do I need?

If a standard size won't work in your space and you'd like to order a custom rug, ask yourself how much of your floor you'd like to see around it, and then also think about the placement of the furniture in that room. For example, in a dining room, you'll want to make sure that you can scoot your chair back from the table without falling off the edge of the rug. Refer to our Design Tips page for wool, for hints and suggestions.

Can I install wool wall-to-wall?

We sell all of our tufted wool weaves as broadloom for installation. They can be installed either by direct glue-down or over a pad—we recommend that you consult a professional installer for technical advice, as well as to measure your space to determine the proper quantity of material to order. Refer to our Design Tips page for wool, for more information.

Is there anywhere I shouldn't put my wool rug?

In terms of overall durability and performance, wool offers a high level of strength and resilience—but that doesn't mean it can go anywhere. Our tufted wool rugs should be used indoors, in dry areas only.

Also, our tufted wool area rugs are machine-finished with a "serged to blend" overcast stitch, using a yarn that closely matches the yarn of the rug. A narrow fabric binding applied beneath the stitching adds strength and helps to keep yarns in place. We like the way a serged edge blends with the rest of the rug, but because the looped threads can be pulled by heels (and pets' paws), we don't recommend placing your rug in areas with heavy foot traffic, human or animal.
