Rug Border & Binding Guide


How you finish your custom area rug will have a big impact on the final look. This page offers a general overview of our border and corner options.

Before placing your order, we recommend that you order border swatches to determine which textures and colors best suit your style. The "Order Samples" option is accessible on each weave page.

Cloth

The amount of border that shows on the face of the rug ranges from 1" to 3 1/2" and does not add to the width of your rug.

Cotton


Cotton is a soft, natural fiber border option that is best for indoor use. Multiple colors are available to finish your custom area rug.

Polyester


Polyester is a man-made synthetic textile that looks similar to natural cotton. This border option is slightly smoother to the touch than cotton and is easy to clean.

Basketweave Linen Border in Color Vision

Linen


Linen is a textile made from the fibers of the flax plant and makes a lovely border on custom area rugs. Like cotton, it is natural but has a more textural feel.

UV Stabilized Polyester


UV stabilized polyester is a synthetic textile that looks similar to natural cotton but will resist fading from sunlight and is easy to clean—spills and stains wipe up easily with a clean, damp cloth.

Leather & Faux

The amount of border that shows on the face of the rug ranges from 2 1/4" to 3 1/2" and does not add to the width of your rug.

Distressed Leather


A distressed leather border has a dull shine, mild texture, natural weathering and feels soft to the touch. Leather wears well over time, showing a sophisticated look.

Smooth Leather


The smooth leather border is soft to the touch and wears well over time, showing a weathered and sophisticated look. Leather bindings are durable, natural, and more cleanable than fabric.

Leatheressence


Leatheressence is a synthetic border that looks like natural leather and is easy to clean. It has a light texture and is very soft to the touch.

Faux Leather


Faux leather is a synthetic border option that looks like natural leather, with added texture and a soft touch. This border is easy to clean and is available in an array of colors.

Serged Edge

A continuous wrap of yarn around the edge of your rug, either by hand or by machine. Machine serged has a finished width of approximately 3/8".

Serging is a continuous wrap of yarn around the edges of the rug that binds the fibers and keeps the weave from unraveling. The yarn is chosen to match the color of your rug as well as the fiber.

Hand Serged Border

Hand Serge


A beautiful hand-sewn finish that secures the edges of an area rug and creates a minimalist look. Allow extra production time for hand serging.

Infinity Edge


A beautiful and minimalist finish for custom area rugs, the Infinity Edge is a type of binding finish that has no border at all and creates a clean, sharp edge.

Jute Braid


The jute braid border option adds a designer and textural finish to jute rugs.

Fringe


A playful finish for synthetic outdoor area rugs.

Galaxy


A streamlined finish for synthetic outdoor area rugs.

Corners

Binding corners may be lapped or mitered, with either a top stitch or hidden stitch, depending on the specific rug.

Mitered Top Stitch


A mitered corner is stitched at a 45° angle and the stitching is visible along the interior edge of the cloth border.

Mitered Hidden Stitch


A mitered corner is stitched at a 45° angle and the stitching is invisible or hidden along the interior edge of the cloth border.

Lapped Corner Hidden Stitch


The cloth border overlaps at a 90° angle and all stitching is invisible or hidden.

Cotton Border

Lapped Corner Top Stitch


The cloth border overlaps in the corner at a 90° angle and visible stitching lines the interior edges of the cloth border.
